Type of poverty: Rural black

The Mississippi Delta is widely regarded as a classic case of rural black poverty. The Delta, which currently has among the highest rates of extreme poverty in the country, had its roots in the plantation economy, experienced some industrial expansion in the late 20th century, but is now undergoing deindustrialization (tempered only by the legalization of casino gambling).
