Type of poverty: Depopulating

The Southern variant of racialized poverty, represented here by New Orleans, is often regarded as the classic symbol of U.S. poverty, but of course it has also developed under a distinctive set of pressures, most notably a rapid depopulation that has only slowly been reversed in the years since Hurricane Katrina (see Fussell et al. 2010; Zaninetti & Colton 2012).
