GREENVILLE-SPARTANBURG-ANDERSON, SOUTH CAROLINA
Possible leader: Laura López-Sanders (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill)
Type of poverty: New immigrant
The Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson (GSA) region of South Carolina, one of our small-community sites, has long been appreciated as one of the classic "new immigrant" destinations and the subject of ongoing studies by Lopez-Sanders (2013) and McDermott (2011). This form of low-wage working poverty arises as recruiters for a burgeoning light-industry base actively import foreign Latino and Latina labor into rural regions that formerly had simple black-white poverty regimes.
